Founding Girl Museum, a Memoir
I wanted to be Indiana Jones when I grew up. The life of early 20th century romantic adventures of fortune and glory beckoned to me. Instead, I pursued this dream by going into the theatre, where acting and writing gave me the freedom to safely explore these worldly ideas. Shifting focus to more scholarly pursuits at University, I studied the three A's- Archaeology, Anthropology and Art History- in order to achieve my girlhood goal of becoming Dr. Jones. Inspired by amazing art and wonderful mentors, I traveled the world, observing unique and creative cultural expressions of humanity. In the process, I visited hundreds of museums and ended up working in several of them. Naturally attracted to the art and drama of life and how it is interpreted, I decided to start my own museum. Drawing on a lifetime of experiences, the one topic I had never seen exhibited in a museum environment was that of girlhood. Throughout my journeys, I witnessed many cultures with an anthropological eye, especially observing girls at work and play constantly awed by their patience, resilience and joy. My own girlhood was a brilliant time of confidence, excitement and exploration that absolutely defined who I am today. Girl Museum is the natural culmination of my talents, concerns and interests with the desire to honor of all the girls in the whole history of the world! I am humbled and excited about the task ahead. Hope to see you all there! Ashley E. Remer |
