Joy of Girlhood
EXHIBITIONS

The primary focus of Girl Museum is on research and exhibitions. We have four unique series of exhibitions planned that will run throughout the year. Each show is based on original research utilizing still images, audio and video. At present we have several exciting projects in production in the USA and New Zealand.

Across Time and Space Girlhood in Art

Girlhood in Art examines girlhood represented in fine art throughout history, featuring painting, sculpture, drawings and other forms of visual art. Our current exhibitions are 'Across Time & Space' and 'Girl Saints'. Upcoming exhibitions include ‘Sitting Still: Girls in 19th c Photography' and 'Illustrated Girls'.

Art of Girlhood

Art of Girlhood
investigates the intangible, ephemeral and material culture of girlhood, like songs, games, clothes, toys, etc. using photographs, audio and video. Our current exhibition is 'Hina Matsuri: Celebrating Girls' Day in Japan'. Upcoming exhibitions include ‘Traditions in Transition: Girlhood of the South Pacific Diaspora’ and ‘More than Pretty: Girls and Body Decoration’.

Girl for Sale

Girls in the World

Girls in the World
focuses on contemporary social issues concerning girls and the history of how those situations came into existence via photographs, audio and video recordings. In this series, we primary work with other nonprofit organizations for their expertise with these various issues. Our current exhibition is ‘Girl for Sale’, which looks at human trafficking. Upcoming exhibitions include ‘Teach Me’ and ‘giHIVrl’.

GirlSpeak

GirlSpeak
is our interactive series based on Girl Museum community participation.  These exhibitions consist of collaborations, submitted artworks on a particular theme, family history projects and the Junior Girl Curator Series.  Our current exhibitions are the ongoing 'Heroines Quilt' project and 'Becoming-Girl'. Upcoming exhibitions include ‘Girl Groups’, ‘Girls' Visions of Peace' and ‘Play’.
