I wept today. I watched the first woman, the first Black woman, the first South Asian woman, take the oath of office for the vice presidency of the United States. It’s not the first time I’ve wept since the 8th of November, 2016, but these tears were cathartic. To see Kamala Harris, sworn in by Justice Sonia Sotomayor (a series of firsts herself) was such a joy. As she took her oath, she set her shoulders back, lifted her chin in the air, and spoke for everyone who is proud of her.

There is so much work to be done. A pandemic to battle. White supremacy. Criminal justice reform. Economic equity. Racial injustice. Women’s rights. Climate change. The list is endless. But today, for the first time in over 4 years, I have hope that we can rise to the challenge.
