As a young American woman growing up with an interest in politics, there were far fewer female politicians I could look to as role models. Thankfully, Hillary Clinton made up in quality for what the United States political landscape lacked in quantity. She is tough, tenacious, and not afraid to take on contentious issues. Even in her recent role as Secretary of State, she always made a point to speak up for those (especially women and children) around the world that didn’t have a voice. While I ultimately decided against a career in politics, Hillary Clinton still very much influenced my path. I now work for Girl Rising, a global action campaign for girls education. Her famous quote is central to our mission and goals: “I believe that the rights of women and girls is the unfinished business of the 21st century.” By working to empower leaders to create change for women and girls in their own communities, we are helping to finish that business.
