Every year since 1977, May 18th has been organized as International Museum Day. This year’s theme is “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.”
So what’s unspeakable? Discussing¬†the impact on women of the male gaze in art. Discussing repatriation of cultural objects. Creating exhibitions that make people uncomfortable: the Holocaust. Human trafficking. Refugees.
By it’s very nature, Girl Museum says the unspeakable. Girls exist. They always have, and they’ve always been a part of culture: creating, participating, consuming. And their stories are as important as anyone else’s.
