Mary-Pat Hector

At just 19 years of age Mary-Pat Hector already has an impressive political CV. She has worked throughout her home city of Atlanta to try and reduce gun violence, she is a youth leader in the National Action Network, and now she is aiming to run for city council in Atlanta.

Mary-Pat’s activism began at a young age; when she was just 13 years old she launched the Just Think Twice campaign. This was her attempt to work with young people to reduce gun violence. The campaign involved her having billboard installed around Atlanta as well as speaking to thousands of children around the United States of America.

Now as a 19 year old she is aiming to run for office in Atlanta. She is working on her campaign at the same time as studying full time in Spelman College (studying women’s studies and political science). Her campaign platform is focused around increasing investment and business opportunities in Atlanta. She has been quoted as saying that she wants to make the city the ‚ÄúSilicon Valley of the South‚Äù. She has also continued her work with trying to prevent young people turning to violence.

The election takes place on March 21st and regardless of the outcome Mary-Pat has made history by becoming the youngest woman to run for political office in Atlanta. If she is not successful this time around I think it’s safe to say that she will have a long political career ahead of her. And as she said herself, perhaps a Presidential campaign one day.
