This is the Dolly Parton I remember as a girl. On TV, singing, cracking jokes, friends with other mega-talented women, being real. She radiated and resonated in my little heart as a true heroine, who lead by example. Dolly’s talent is a one-off. Her kindness and generosity should be emulated by everyone. She lived the reality that you are always where you come from, but with a positive spirit, you can always upgrade.
Here are four things I learned from Dolly.
Be authentic.
Ironic for someone who was a larger-than-life character and wore a costume everyday, Dolly exuded her real self through the carefully and cleverly constructed facade. She kept her self safe and private while also sharing it with the world. A magical feat.
Do the work.
She worked so hard and we all reaped the benefits. Not only did she do the work in all aspects of her music, she supported so many others and knew it. She was a multi-hyphenate beyond measure. I can write this tribute with tears running down my cheeks listening to her songs, but can also have many laughs at her variety of on-screen roles as well. ‘9 to 5’ was a pivotal moment for me and so many other burgeoning feminists. With the first of the three in the triumvirate of her, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda to fall, I am steeling myself for the heartache ahead.
Don’t seek approval.
Many people are only now finding out about her unbelievable amount of philanthropy. From her reading and book programs (Imagination Library) to scholarships, to her support for fire victims, she supported small communities, especially near to where she grew up. Her reach beyond her music was vast.
Include everyone.
Dolly loved her fans- ALL of them. She held no prejudices (that we know) and allowed everyone into her world. Her ability and desire to embrace people to wanted to hear her music, but also NEEDED to hear it was a true gift.
While celebrity deaths are not unique- everybody dies- there are some that hit differently and harder as they mean something invaluable to us an critical moments in our own lives. Dolly was one of those and she will live forever in our hearts.
