Girl for Sale

Girl for Sale is a collaborative virtual outreach exhibition about girl trafficking that interrogates and responds to the issues through poetry, art and education. It is about outrage, survival and prevention.

This co-production of Girl Museum and the American Poetry Museum, launched on 31 March 2011, will continue to expand, incorporating contributions from the public and new partnerships.

Classical Girls

What was life like for a girl in Classical Greece and Rome?

Classical Greece and Rome are portrayed as the start of Western Civilization. During the period from 500 BCE to 250 CE, these civilizations flourished – bringing about achievements in fields like art, medicine, and philosophy that continue to influence us today. Evidence about young girls in these civilizations can readily be found. Yet many museums have yet to reveal their stories. In this exhibit, we bring the girls of Classical Greece and Rome to life – showing how their daily lives were similar and different, both from each other and from our modern lives. Travel back with us to these heralds of Western civilization, and discover the surprisingly complex lives of girls.

Gazed and Confused

Gazed and Confused is not about a specific type of girlhood. We include a variety of styles and subjects as rich and diverse as the audience that Girl Museum represents. Just like real girls all over the world, each artist has contributed something which reflects her own experiences and inspirations. Together, they provide a compelling cultural commentary on how we choose to remember and give life to girlhood experiences.

Gamer Girl

Today, games are everywhere — and so are gamers. They’re engaging, social, tech-savvy and goal-oriented people with a real drive to improve themselves and the world around them. They connect with fellow gamers, in-game and in real life, and participate in making and playing games that have lasting social impacts.

But if this is who the “new gamers” are, why is there still a problem for girls in gaming?

52 Objects

How are we different – and similar – to girls who lived decades or centuries ago? What can the artifacts that girls left behind tell us about our present and future?

At Girl Museum, we aim to find out.
